Movie Review Essay

Writer/Director J.J. Abrams has done it again, with an entirely original film, “Super 8”which came out in June 10, 2011 made an outstanding 127 mill.$ in Box office sales, is not just a film based on a television show but a masterpiece duo with Steven Spielberg. This film combines sci-fi, family drama, an alien invasion with childhood romances this meant that it required a lot of imagination. It drove me back to my childhood and made me feel powerful, almost like a hero, It reminded me of when I used to go play with friends and family in the park, trying to discover a larger part of life. The three main factors of this movie, characterization, writing, and scenery/set design are implied by a fairly young crew of actors which add this sense of comfort ability and catch the attention of an audience of all ages, while it relates to everybody’s life.

J.J. Abrams gives the audience instances to grow compassionate towards the characters as they discover their vulnerabilities and strong suits. Abrams does this, showing the characters through descriptive scenes, not just making them scream or cringe like most action films do. He makes them feel very natural with very overdramatic scenes. The actor Joel Courtney gives a superb portrayal as Joe Lamb, a child whose mother has just died in a horrible accident, and his intensity is matched by Elle Fanning as Alice Dainard, the rebellious girl of the town. The scientific fiction storyline is set in the 1970’s with a small group of kids working on their Super 8 movie when suddenly they witness a disturbing train crash. Followed with mysterious disappearances they suspect that it was not an accident, as the deputy tries to uncover the mystery they find out that the inexplicable events are caused by something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined. What made the plot of the movie come together was most likely done by the set design which gives realism to every scene and the cast deliver the keen, smooth rhythm allowing the audience to become captivated by the curiosity of knowing what is lurking in the small Ohio town.

Super 8 is Creative and has the ability to encapsulate viewers of all ages, this is guaranteed as your childhood is captivated again as you also relive precious memories. J.J. Abrams unique combinations of styles conceived from other movies, for example; ET, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. These examples make this summer movie what it is, by conveying the same persona or in other words it has all the great elements that make it a great summer movie with a great story to tell. This all accomplished with all the important factors that conclude how the movie will be realized, are the characterization, the writing, scenery/set design, and casting.
